The Stiletto Studio model is the range topper that, for some reason, isn’t generally imported into the UK so we thought we’d have to do something about that as these basses are quite superb and represent terrific value for money.
Build quality, fittings and electronics are all top notch and the bass delivers some lovely and unique tones courtesy of its 4 pairs of strings - each pair being tuned one octave apart (the standard string and the lighter string tuned an octave higher). Think Bass Octaver pedal but with the extra octave being higher rather than lower.
The neck width has not been increased by the addition of the 4 octave strings and is fast and slinky to play.
We fondly recall the 8 string Shergold Marathon bass from the early 80’s and similarly here, the 4 pairs of strings deliver a unique, thick and harmonically rich ‘choral’ tone which sounds better and better the further you venture up the neck. Little 2 string (in this case 4 strings) chords sound wonderful , especially with a little chorus or reverb added.
While, in essence, you play it as you would a normal 4 string bass, its fair to say that this isn’t a novice’s instrument but better in the hands of a player with a reasonable amount of experience.
4 string and 5 string models also available.
