Entirely handbuilt, another stunning Smorgasbord of tone woods from Paul, and also the first 5 string Caiman to be built. Its also the first Caiman to sport a raked back headstock. The nut width, at only 43mm, is no wider than many 4 string basses (Stingray, Precision, G&L’s) and the narrow 16.5mm string spacing makes this a real slinky, fast player which will also suit players with smaller hands looking for a more manageable 5 string bass.
Build quality and finish are, as usual, exemplary and such is the quality of the polished oil finish that you wouldn’t know that the instrument hadn’t been satin lacquered. Playability is superb and the neck is both narrow and shallow to facilitate effortless playing all the way up to the 24th fret.
Tonally, the bass is punchy and articulate with a good overall frequency response from big warm lows, tight mids and biting (but never strained) highs. If you’re feeling patriotic and are looking for a one-off, unique custom 5 string then this may be of interest.
And the price?… not a lot more than many mass produced basses.
