Chowny Bass Guitars CHB-1 (short scale)
£449.00
Chowny Bass Guitars is a new British Company which handles design work from the UK and sub-contracts the build stage to the same factory in China that builds BC Rich and Tanglewood instruments among others. The company’s ethos is that ‘making affordable and attainable instruments doesn’t have to go hand in hand with compromises in quality or design’.
This a very nicely built and finished semi-hollow, arch-top bodied, short scale bass with 5 layer black/white binding to the body. It doesn’t offer a massive range of tones but what is on offer is very pleasing. If warm, thumping bass is your thing (which it clearly is if you’re considering a Gibson-style semi-hollow) then this is up to the job. The delivery is big, warm but deliciously ‘tight’ and articulate…never ‘muffled’ and ‘muzzy’ like so many of the early Gibsons.
Make no mistake, you will cut through the mix with the CHB-1. At this price point it doesn’t have too much competition out there and it looks the Dog’s B******ks!!!!!
Stephen Chown tells me they are also prototyping a 34″ scale version.
(Available uncased for £375).
